Benton is a city of 35,014 people (2020), the county seat of Saline County and a suburb of Little Rock along I-30. It's the 12th most populous city in Arkansas.

Salt, clay and furniture

Benton was first settled in 1833 and named for Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton, and it was chartered in 1836 when Arkansas became a state. Early industry included a salt works opened in 1827, pottery made from local kaolin clay from around 1900, and logging and furniture making from the surrounding timber.
