From Contract to Moving Day: A Little Rock Timeline

A home sale has its own calendar: inspections, appraisals, loan approval and a closing date that can shift. Moving day has to fit around it. This timeline helps buyers, sellers and their agents plan a move in Central Arkansas without last-minute scrambles.

Six to eight weeks out

• Get two or three moving estimates, ideally with a walk-through or video
• Ask whether each estimate is hourly, binding or non-binding: see binding vs non-binding estimates
• Check the mover's registration: see how to check a mover before you book
• Start clearing out rooms you rarely use

Four weeks out

• Book the mover once the closing date looks firm
• Ask about short-term storage in case closing slips: see moving and storage
• Order boxes and packing supplies, or book packing services
• Arrange school transfers and records if you have children

Two weeks out

• Pack everything except daily essentials
• Schedule utility transfers for both homes
• Confirm moving hours and parking at both addresses

Closing week

1. Confirm the closing time and when you'll receive keys
2. Confirm the mover's arrival time and crew size
3. Pack a first-night box and keep valuables and documents with you
4. Do a final walk-through of the home you're buying

Moving day

• Be at the old home when the crew arrives to answer questions
• Check every room, closet and outdoor shed before the truck leaves
• At the new home, direct furniture to the right rooms and check for damage
• Set up beds first

When closing and moving day don't line up

If you must be out before the new home is ready, many movers can keep your belongings on the truck overnight or in their warehouse. Ask about costs ahead of time so a delay doesn't become an emergency.
