How to Check a Mover Before You Book
Most movers are honest, but moving scams are real, and they usually start with a low price over the phone. A few checks before you book protect your belongings and your budget.
Request a moverLook up the USDOT number
Movers that carry household goods across state lines must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. You can search a company's USDOT number on the FMCSA's Protect Your Move site to see its registration and complaint history.
Local moves
For moves within Arkansas, ask the mover what registration or authority they hold and whether they carry insurance. Check reviews and how long they've worked in Central Arkansas.
Get an in-home or video estimate
A reliable estimate comes from seeing what you have. Be cautious of firm prices given without any look at your home.
Get it in writing
The estimate should list the services, the pricing method and any extra charges for stairs, long carries or packing.
Deposits
Be wary of movers who want a large cash deposit before the move.
Company name
Make sure the name on the truck, the estimate and the paperwork match.
Coverage
Ask what happens if something is damaged and what the basic coverage pays per pound.
Red flags
Pressure to sign quickly, no physical address, a price far below everyone else's or a refusal to put anything in writing are warning signs.
