Packing a Kitchen for a Move
The kitchen takes longer to pack than any other room, and it's where most breakage happens. A little planning makes it far easier.

Pack special-occasion dishes, extra glasses and rarely used appliances a week or two ahead.
Use the right boxes
Small and medium boxes for dishes and glasses keep the weight down. Dish packs have thicker walls for fragile items.
Wrap plates on edge
Wrap each plate in paper and stand them on edge in the box like records. They're stronger that way than stacked flat.
Glasses
Wrap each glass separately and use cell dividers if you have them. Fill gaps with crumpled paper.
Pots and pans
Nest pots and pans and use them to hold lids, utensils and towels.
Small appliances
Pack appliances in their original boxes if you have them. Tape cords to the side and remove glass parts.
Food
Use up what you can. Movers usually won't move open food or perishables. Donate unopened cans to a local food bank.
First-night box
Pack a box with plates, cups, a pan, a knife, dish soap, paper towels and coffee, and keep it with you.
