Binding vs Non-Binding Moving Estimates
Moving quotes can look alike and still mean very different things. Knowing the type of estimate you're getting is the best way to avoid a surprise bill on moving day.
Request a moverHourly quotes
Local moves are often quoted as an hourly rate. The final bill depends on how long the move takes, so the estimated hours matter as much as the rate.
Non-binding estimates
A non-binding estimate is the mover's best guess. On long-distance moves, the final price is usually based on the actual weight or volume and the services provided.
Binding estimates
A binding estimate sets the price for the items and services listed. If you add items or services, the price can change, so make sure the list is complete.
Not-to-exceed
Some movers offer a guaranteed maximum: you pay the lower of the estimate or the actual charges.
What's included
Check whether packing materials, disassembly, travel time, fuel and stairs are included.
Accessorial charges
Extra charges for long carries, stairs, elevators, shuttles and storage can add up. Ask for them in writing.
Comparing quotes
Line up estimates on the same items and services. A low price that leaves things out isn't really lower.
Changes on the day
If something on the list changes, ask the crew lead to explain the new price before work continues.
